Hi, I'm Mike Clark

I'm the owner and inspector at What's Next Ltd, based in Papakura, Auckland. I have more than 20 years of experience in commercial and residential construction, and I now use that experience to look at the buildings other people are about to buy, sell, rent or maintain.

I carry out pre-purchase, pre-sale, Healthy Homes and maintenance inspections to NZS 4306, with thermal imaging as standard on a Standard House Inspection. I look at the building as a whole: how it was built, how it has aged, and where moisture, movement or poor workmanship may be hiding.

My aim is simple. You get a plain-English report with clear photos, and a phone call to talk you through it, so you can buy with confidence.

My background

I hold a National Certificate in Carpentry through BCITO and ran my own residential and light commercial building company for eight years with a team of six. The work included high-end renovations, new architectural builds, outdoor entertainment areas and bathrooms, and the Lighthouse artwork piece in front of The Cloud on Auckland's Waterfront.

I then moved into commercial construction as a site manager, senior site manager, construction project manager and construction manager, working on hotel and apartment projects with on-site teams of up to 150. That meant programming, budgets, subcontractors, design reviews, health and safety, and getting projects through council sign-off and Code of Compliance.

It is why my inspections look beyond surface symptoms for the underlying cause, and why I can tell you what a repair involves, what it is likely to need and in what order to do it. If you need more than an inspection, I also help with maintenance and renovations and project management and consulting.

How I work

• Honest, not alarmist. No building is perfect. I tell you what matters, what can wait, and what needs a specialist.
• Fast. Inspections are mostly done within 24 hours of booking, with the report within 24 hours.

In the community

Outside work I'm heavily involved in my local community. I'm the President of the Karaka Junior Rugby Club, where I help keep junior rugby running for local kids and families.
